What is a plunge bra?

What is a plunge bra?

You could be forgiven if you get it wrong. There are many styles and types of plunge bras. The basic shape of a plunge bra is a low-cut bra. However, the brand may vary in how low.

A plunge bra is distinguished by a deep neckline that drops to a low centre gore. This is not historical Gore. It’s a triangular piece of West Ethiopian city Gore. It’s “a triangular, tapering, or rectangular piece of material used to make a garment, sail or umbrella”. Did you know there were so many Gores!!

The cup’s centre is where the underwire creates a small bridge.

Why do I keep harping on about the Gore? It’s what makes a plunge bra different from other styles.

Or does it?

Plunge bra shapes can vary greatly. Some bras might look more like a full-cup bra, while others may look more like a balconette bra. Although both styles are described as plunge bras by their manufacturers, they do have a noticeable and obvious difference in the height of their gores. The style on the left could also be called a balconyette or full cup bra.

Above, the black plunge bra has the smallest Gore (the sewn kind, not the land type). This is a Curvy, and it’s a true plunge. But not everyone can do this – hello squishy four! Sometimes we need more Gore to separate the soft parts. Most of us don’t have boobs that are so strong they can hold a true plunge. We all need some fabric. These other plunges are a great help. Brava recognizes that not every bra is right for everyone. We are open to all types of plunge bras. The style you choose is important because you are more than just a size or number.

Plunge bra facts

  • This means that the underwire is less than other wires, which is great for women with tight breasts.
  • You can cut and sew plunge bras. This means that separate pieces of fabric are sewn together, or moulded into one piece.
  • You can have a plunge bra with no cleavage and a powerful cleavage.
  • A plunge bra with side support panels is great for those with wide breasts. It can push your breast tissue towards the centre if you have a large set.
  • It’s not always a good idea to have your breasts softer on the top than they are at the bottom. Sometimes your breast tissue may fall into the center of the cup, or you may not fill it to the top. This could cause the bra to spill a bit. Our fitters might suggest the Panache Ana Plunge for you. A bra with a higher center will give you a beautiful lift and more north-facing cleavage.

What should a plunging bra look like?

The centre gore should be positioned against the chest bone, just like any bra. It is possible that the cup is too small, or the band too large, which can lead to uncomfortable fitting.

Our favourite plunge bras

All time favourite…..drumroll please…

Stretch lace plunge bra

It’s still low enough to wear with a low neckline, but it has enough support to keep you in place. But my favorite feature is the light stretch lacing. It does an excellent job of holding and seperating. This bra is a great choice for most women.

Have you ever heard of the Full Cup Plunge Bra. We just invented it.

These two Elomi styles were difficult to choose between.
