Rashida Jones: “There are many ways to be a woman, and still be sexy.”
The actress, writer, and producer Rashida Java Jones suggested we meet at a private club in West Hollywood. This seemed like a great idea at the time. However, as I wait for her, I worry about the dress code. Every woman except me is wearing skinny designer jeans and metallic heels, a sexy blouse, full makeup, and a huge designer handbag at 3 pm on Saturday. After I have shifted self-consciously in my floral cotton dress, Jones walks towards me, naked and dressed “like a mime” in flats, wide-legged, cropped black pants and a Breton shirt. It is adorable. Although she does look a bit out of place, her motivation for suggesting this venue is quickly evident.
She says they have the best chocolate chip cookies and orders a platter as soon as she gets up.
I told her that I was concerned about the club’s dress code. “Oh my God, that entire LA Barbie doll look. She says. Strangely, everyone wants to be like everyone else. I enjoy fashion, but it’s not what I am drawn to. I like conservative dressing. I don’t like wearing clothes to make people want sex.
While waiting, I said that men kept approaching two women sitting next to me in extremely sexy LA uniforms. One chat-up line was, “Can you just charge your iPhone here?”
“Yeah. More like, “Can I just charge your penis over there?” Jones cackles.
Los Angeles is where celebrity offspring are subject to a constant cycle of reality TV, rehab, sex tapes and mug shots. But Jones, 37, the daughter of actor Peggy Lipton and musician Quincy Jones, does things differently. She is a Harvard graduate in philosophy and religion who was once destined to be a judge or president. However, her most notable role as a comedian is that of Ann Perkins in Parks And Recreation. It was created by the same team who brought The Office to America. However, the show is similar to its predecessor but more focused on women. The show also features the amazing Amy Poehler.
Jones was a TV star for many years before Parks and Recreation. She appeared on shows like Freaks And Geeks, Boston Public, and, more recently, feature films such as I love you, Man with Paul Rudd and The Social Network. Jones is a sweet and realistic actress who can also handle heartbreak. She played Rudd’s fiancee in the I Love You, Man. ( Jason Segel). Jones was more than a nagging girlfriend. She made Jones a sympathetic character, explaining her understanding of her fiance’s inexplicable frustration at her oral sex behaviour to her new friend. She doesn’t do her role justice in her most recent role in the British salsa dancing romcom Cuban Fury, where she plays Nick Frost’s love interest. She talks enthusiastically about how much she loved Spaced’s British classic TV show. She says that she is obsessed with Nick Frost, adding, less controversially, that she also wants to learn salsa.
